Be very careful when buying from these guys. They have inserted in their bill of sale a clause which says: "By purchasing the above vehicle and signing this form, I the purchases agree to the following: I am full satisfied with the above vehicle, I agree to take full responsilbuilty [sic] of the maintenance of this vehicle from the date of purchase including any faults that may occur after the purchase of this vehicle. I also agree that I will not hold Autohouse Bedfordshire responsible for any misfortune, breakdown, inconvenience and faults that may occur to this vehicle after purchase. I understand this vehicle may need unknown work to an unknown extent and I am full responsible after the date of purchase. I am going with a warranty company of my own choice and if for any reason they do not pay out I will not hold Autohouse Bedfordshire responsible. I have had these statements read out to me and I fully understand and agree. " In fact, when asked to sign the bill of sale, these statements were not read out to me. Luckily I have learned these days to read the small print, and the wording rang alarm bells, so I said I was not prepared to sign the document, without inserting my own additional clause saying that all the above was subject to my retaining my statutory consumer rights, based on the car being sold in 'excellent condition throughout' - which is how it was decribed in the advertising.. When I got the car home, a significant fault soon developed - a problem with the switch on the automatic gear box - and there were a number of other smaller problems evident: eg. the spare tyre had a puncture; brake pads needed replacing; fog lamps did not work and were loose in their housing; back jump seat would not fold into stowaway position, as well as possible problem with the coolant system, though this needed more investigation, etc. I contacted them to ask either to return the car or get them to refund the cost of repairs, given that I had only bought the car on the basis that it was in excellent condition. I was referred to their 'head of sales' who initially told me that, because I had signed their bill of sale contract, they had no responsibility to do anything. He said they had a huge legal team and there was nothing I could do as the contract was watertight. He said they best they could do would be to investigate my claim but at most they would offer a partial credit note which I could redeem against some future purchase. He started out polite but gradually became more assertive and even aggressive, so I ended the call. I then wrote to them, pointing out that, under the new Consumer Rights Act which came into effect in October 2015, their contractual waiver was probably unenforceable. But in any event, I had included the additional clause maintaining my consumer rights on their own bill of sale. Under the Act there is a clear right to return the good is a fault becomes evident within the first 30 days after purchase, and it is reported promptly. I was subsequently called by the MD who did agree to accept a return and refund. However, when I arrivedat the showroom with the car the next day, they insisted on charging an 'administration fee' of £100 - I pointed out this is illegal under the Act, but I agreed to pay it as I did not want the hassle of another stand off at their premises. The MD did make the point that I should have commissioned a thorough inspection before I bought the car. I guess he was correct in this, and I can understand his frustration, as he would now incur costs to re-advertise and re-clean the car. So maybe the admin cost was justified. Nevertheless I feel the extend of the problems that quickly became evident, combined with their initial aggressive response to my request for a refund was at best very poor; at worse in breach of trading standards and illegal. However, this is my opinion and I have not taken legal advice, as I did not want to rack up more costs. I have given them a 2 because they did in the end agree to return the car, though I wonder what would have happened had I not inserted my extra clause in their bill of sale.

The process was so quick but from the brief interactions I had with the dealer I found them to be nice and trustworthy, the car I bought was reasonably priced and well taken care of, I've got no complaints at all.

Phoned to book an appointment to view a car, made appointment for the following day, turned up and was told we weren't in the appointment book. Also that someone else was literally on their way to view the car from a 150 miles or so away and that they'd promised they'd hold it for them. We ourselves had traveled 80 miles and were basically told unless we could say we'd have the car now that we couldn't look. In the end they agreed to give 15-20 minutes viewing time and then pushed for an answer. Needless to say we walked away. Totally flabbergasted to be honest at the sheer lack of humility or remorse at the events. Both salesmen (there are only two) swore blind they hadn't taken any call and resolutely refused to acknowledge any appointment had been made and yet I actually had my mobile with me, from which the call was made, in my hand and showed them their mobile number and date time and duration of call. One of them asked me to ring it which I did and it rang in their hand and yet still no apology or remorse was expressed for the obvious lack of writing the booking in the appointment log. Certainly no customer is ever going to be right here - they didn't learn from that book (or any other book I would say). To cap it all a particularly aggressive end to the experience occurred when pushed a final time for a decision to which I refused and then asked the guy straight if he'd like me to leave. The reply was yes and that I hadn't listened to anything they'd said and that I shouldn't make any comments on exit - which I took great offence at but remained calm. I said I will say what I like to which I was basically threatened with forceable removal from the premises. I really don't know how it came to such - bear in mind that we had traveled ourselves for nearly 2 hours (to get there alone) with a full intent to buy the vehicle we'd expressed an interest in but obviously subject to inspection and test drive of the vehicle and somehow we were made to feel the least welcome that I think I've ever felt anywhere. So much so when I asked to see the cars documentation we were taken briefly from a frankly 'freezing' warehouse, where the cars are stored and displayed, to a warm office but promptly left that warmth for a table back in the warehouse as the office was being used by 'Customers' (their words) which of course tells you what they viewed us as. I find that amazing as we were as genuine a purchaser as almost anyone else that could have walked through their door - the shortsightedness, inefficiency, in-humility and lack of any professionalism or problem solving skills on the part of the salesmen is immense. In summary therefore - if for whatever reason they don't like the look of you on entry then you can forget it, if you speak to whichever one doesn't write anything down in the appointment book (we never did get any admission that they'd received a call so don't know who that was) then you may as well forget it also. All in all these people are not salesmen - they really just want you to give any car a cursory look then take them at their word/advert before parting with your money. Unfortunately I believe sales begins with trust and I simply wouldn't trust these people. For what it's worth the car itself was probably about 80% as described, the HPI check (which incidentally we'd paid for) came up clean although there was some inaccuracies in the description with regard to the cars condition and service history (which wasn't full as described but instead only partial) which together with some wear inside the vehicle that looked a little out of place might have made me a little suspicious anyway. In the end even if I'd have loved the car and it was fully as described then I don't think I could have brought myself to part with any cash to these people - not nice people. In terms of staff my vote goes to one of the car care guys we met in the warehouse - in our brief chat with him he came across as much more personable - I'd buy something from him as he managed to build more trust in 30 seconds than the main owner could probably ever build in a lifetime. I may be wrong but in this business surely first impressions are everything. On leaving of my own free will, and not being forceably removed as threatened, the second (non owner/manager) salesman did at least offer an apology to which I expressed gratitude - a little humility and understanding goes a long way. Unfortunately of course it was all too late by then and a thoroughly horrible experience. My recommendation is unfortunately to avoid.
