I bought a BMW 530D from Whitethor December 2022 as a distance buyer. My first contact with Whitethor I spoke to someone exceedingly unhelpful that refused to send me details of the cars service history as “it was only a £14k motor and had passed their quality checks” so obviously would be good enough for me. He later admitted the car was off site having the brakes replaced and would call me back later with the details, which he didn’t. I didn’t get this chaps name. I called back in the evening and was delt with by Blair who couldn’t have been more helpful, sent me through photos detailing the service history and answered a few other questions within half an hour via whatsapp. I called back immediately to pay for the car and have it delivered as I’m based in London. From when I first talked to Blair till taking delivery of the car was a faultless experience, I was kept up to date with times and was even able to pick the colour of the alloys as they were being refurbed prior to delivery. The delivery driver was on time, very polite and the car was exactly as represented. Around a month into ownership the passenger side subwoofer stopped working, when investigating I found that the whole of the passenger side of the car was submerged in water. This turned out to be a fairly common issue with F10 5 series there’s a yellow grommet that fails and allows water to enter the cabin. I first called the warranty company who informed me water ingress was not covered, I called Whitethor and Blair assured me that they will get it sorted, we agreed that I’d take the car to my local garage and the mechanic should call back and speak to Mo to get it resolved, happy days. This is where the experience stopped being good, Mo gave my mechanic a pretty hard time over the phone regarding the repairs. The correct way of dealing with a flooded car is to fix the source of the leak get the seats out, the carpets up, use a wet vac to remove the water, then dry the carpets which can take days this will prevent mould and future electrical problems. I was quoted £350 for the work as I agreed with my mechanic to take the car back with the passenger seat out and the carpets up to dry the car myself while using it. Mo would only agree to £120 for the repair, when I phoned to attempt to reason with him as this didn’t even take into account the second hand subwoofer I’d purchased of ebay to replace the drowned one for £70 to fit myself. Mo wouldn’t budge, during the conversation he didn’t stop far short of accusing me of bullying him, he also tried to insinuate that my mechanic was trying to rip me off (I’ve been using him for five years at this point), he even tried to convince me that taking the carpets up wasn’t necessary and that I should have just drilled a hole in the floor of the car to let the water out then blocked it with a plug… which is quite possibly the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard in my life. He said that he couldn’t provide any money towards the speaker because in his words “where would it end”. He tried to explain to me that he couldn’t just pay out on any problem because then he wouldn’t have the money to fix problems like a broken gearbox for his other customers. Essentially my issue didn’t seem to be serious enough… charming… He also tried to tell me that it was a nine year old car so problems like this should be expected, personally I don’t think a nine year old car should ever leak so badly to fill up with several inches of rain water, but who knows perhaps my standards are just too high and it was indeed fit for purpose! To be fair I was only out of pocket £300 odd in the end which isn’t the end of the world when buying a second hand car (even if it should by law have been covered), I was just left speechless for the last six months regarding Mo’s customer service skills and at best lack of technical knowledge… at worst barefaced dishonesty. Two stars one for Blair one for Ellis as genuinely the buying experience was great no stars at all for the after sales!
Whitethor Cars from Whitethor Cars in response to Poor After Sales
Hi Will, It’s a shame that after claiming and accepting our Payout, you have come back 6 months later to poorly review us. I can only apologies that we haven’t meet your expectations this time. Just to go over a couple of points. All our adverts display last service date and mileage and how many services a car has had, and I can assure you no one here would have said “It’s only a 14k Motor and has passed our checks”. If a car wasn’t on-site we would have struggled to get the service information for you but I’m glad that once back one of our team got the information to you professionally and quickly. I’m happy that upon deciding to purchase the car simply from our photos, reviews and descriptions the service provided by Whitethor Cars was quick, efficient and professional every step of the way. I apologies that the 2013 5 Series have a common problem where a grommet in the bulkhead leaks water on heavy rain downpour days, if this would have happened during the short period of time it was in stock we would have picked up on it and it would never have been delivered with this issue. I remember dealing with the claim and as standard practise, Glass, Rubber, Tyres and Brakes ETC are not covered by warranty companies as these are wear and tear and perishable items. We don’t give garages a hard time, but we rather knuckle down on exactly what is being claimed, why its being claimed and what we cover. We have found garages see warranty companies as an endless pot of money so there a lot of questions that are asked before pay-out. In this case it was apparent that most of the labour claim was for the garage to remove all your carpets as you say to dry out any moisture when this can be done a much easier and simpler way which you even found yourself after we declined to pay for the full amount. With regards to bullying, I can deal with frustrated customers and if conversations do get heated I’m not afraid to let the customer know on the phone call, as we all deserve to treated with respect when we come to work. All cars have drain holes in panels, doors and boot floors. These can then be filled with a rubber grommet as the BMW yellow one that had failed. Adding one to remove the water quickly and dry the interior out is a perfectly acceptable repair and then filling with a rubber grommet as you said there was several inches of water. I come up against this argument a lot and id like to back it again for any future customers. We are in the business of selling used cars, Like the 78000mile 9yr old car that you bought. Being angry because the car has needed maintenance at 9yrs old is not the answer and every used car purchased should come with the expectation that there is a possibility that a repair or some maintenance will be needed during ownership. A small issue like this with a common BMW failed grommet which we paid out to repair seems to be the correct outcome. Our warranties are there for our customers and we do pay out and as I explained on this occasion you didn’t get the full pay-out you claimed for but should you have had a more serious problem I assured you we would have still been there to repair and get the issue fixed. All the best Mo
After advertising my car on Autotrader, I was approached by Blair at Whitethor cars, who made what I felt was a fair offer for my car so decided to sell my car to them. Any reservations I may have had around selling to a dealer rather than to a private buyer we’re quickly dispelled. The whole process was swift, efficient and I found Blair & his colleagues a pleasure to deal with. Based on my own experience I would certainly deal with them again and recommend them to others.
Great service, very pleased with whole process of dealing with them. Great collection service.
