By way of update from last review - The car we bought from SMC this summer (Range Rover) was a complete dud. It cost £10k and it turns out it needed £14k worth of work done to it. SMC took our car back to fix it, several times, said they had done the work, and actually hadn't. We were without our car for weeks and months as it wouldn't run, or was 'being fixed'. The customer service went from friendly to cold, and then from cold to not answering our calls, and then telling us to 'f*** off' on the phone in the background. This was after they had told me they 'didnt appreciate' the bad review i put on autotrader... They refused to take back the car. The AA (they are an AA approved garage) intervened and tried to get them to take back the car - SMC refused. The ombudsman couldn't help us because SMC Chelmsford are NOT registered with the ombudsman... Thankfully our finance company, Close Brothers, took on our case, independently assessed the vehicle, told us NOT to drive it as it was unsafe, and under the Consumer Act insisted that SMC took back the car. They finally agreed, but refused to pick it up from us. The car was unsafe to drive so we had to pay to get it delivered back to them. They then refused to refund me the full amount i paid for the car, using inflated damages as a reason, and went on to sell the car to some unsuspecting customer days later BEFORE THEY EVEN REFUNDED US THE MONEY, so the car was still, technically ours. These guys are probably quite nice if the car they have just got hold of and then sold on to you happens to be a good ish runner, if its not, then God help you. I am taking civil action against them for the costs we have incurred throughout this unbelievably stressful time. Steer clear...

In response to the following review we find this does not reflect our company in the slightest. We agreed to refund the vehicle after having it for a second time to correct the issues the customer was having, this since has been repaired and was the following issues wrong with it: CARRY OUT DEEP DIVE DIAGNOSTICS WITH SDD TO FIND, REAR NEARSIDE SENSOR NOT WORKING CORRECTLY,SUBSTITUE SENSOR TO FIND SAME FAULT, CARRY OUT LOOM CHECKS TO FIND LOOM HAD BEEN EATERN BY MICE OR RAT , REPAIR LOOM, CARRY OUT SUSPENSION RECALIBRATION, CAR NOW WORKING. This could of happened while the customer had procession of this vehicle. Also this repair did not cost the £14k as the customer has stated in their review. The customer was never without their car for months and this is an outright lie to slander our business. The finance company agreed to the deductions for the customer due to the damage that was pictured on the recovery truck the customer had arranged. Since having sold over 10,000 cars these reviews the customer has left has completely slandered our business with their 5 negative reviews. When all we tried to do was help the customer in the first place, even though their tone with our employees was appalling. AA and the finance company did not want to deal with this customer for the exact same reasons. It was best for both parties for us to no longer have you as a customer.
Excellent service, good variety of vehicles, easy to arrange a test drive and simple to arrange collection.

Great car and customer service. Bought a Volkswagen Touareg from SMC Chelmsford on New Years Eve and was served by Joe. Excellent customer service and extremely helpful throughout. Really happy with the car and really grateful Joe took the time to source the best possible deal for us. Would definitely buy a car here again.
